DESCRIPTION

The word 'Ikat' is derived from 'mengikat', a Malay-Indonesian word meaning 'to tie'. In simple terms, 'Ikat' means 'to bind'. In this process, beautiful designs in the fabric are created by resist-dyeing the threads before the fabric is woven.
An apparent "blurriness" to the design is a defining feature of Ikat fabrics. The weaver's tremendous difficulty aligning the dyed strands so that the design appears correctly in the completed cloth is the cause of the blurriness. This unique technique of tying and dyeing creates intrigue and adds magic to the sarees. Ikat sarees are available in different fabrics like silk or cotton.
